Construction on the church began in 1851 and it was completed in 1852 before being consecrated in 1854. The architect was Andrew Mosely of London, and the south aisle was added in 1910–11 by G.E. Halliday. Rood screen 1890 by William Tate, an associate of C.E. Kempe. The font was designed by Halliday and carved by William Clarke. There is woodwork by F.C. Eden and W.D. Caroe. In 1961 a bequest of £15000 enabled Stephen Dykes-Bower to restore, re-order and enrich the interior.
