Louis Christophe Gustave Paul Doré (1832-1883)

Prolific French artist and illustrator. Worked extensively as a literary illustrator in Paris and London, illustrating works by Rabelais, Balzac, Dante, Lord Byron and Edgar Allan Poe. Doré's English Bible (1866) led to a major exhibition of his work in London in 1867 and the foundation of the Doré Gallery in New Bond Street. His studio of engravers ensured that his work reached a wide audience.
His work was bought by Richard Glynn Vivian, who was a friend of the artist.
