Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519)
Artist, scientist and inventor born in Italy, near Florence. He was apprenticed to Andrea del Verrochio in Florence, and set up his own studio there until going into the service of the Duke of Milan from 1482 until 1499. He worked as a painter, architect and engineer for various patrons before moving to Rome in 1513 where he worked for the Pope. He died in Cloux, France while in the service of Francis I.
